The finding of Moses
A tent-stitch picture of
The Finding of Moses.
English.
Mid 17th century.
The picture is finely worked in subtle shades of blues, greens, rust, beige and ivory polychrome silks on a linen ground. Small pieces of mica create the reflective surface of the castles’ windows. In this picture Pharoah’s daughters and her handmaids are dressed in loose flowing gowns which mix elements of classical and seventeenth century styles. A lone crocodile evokes the Nile, the actual setting of the Old Testament story.
